Huntsville Council Honors Community Leaders and Celebrates Team Redstone’s National Victory

Councilwoman Michelle Watkins (District 1), joined by Mayor Tommy Battle, recognizes Team Redstone for their championship performance at the 41st Annual Army 10-Miler, celebrating the runners, coaches, and military community whose dedication brought home the Eagle Trophy once again.

HUNTSVILLE — The November 20 Huntsville City Council meeting opened with community pride as council members recognized individuals and groups whose leadership and accomplishments continue to strengthen Huntsville.

Councilmember Bill Kling Honors Julia Calvert for Adaptive Climbing Program

The council first recognized Julia Calvert, whose creation of an adaptive climbing clinic has expanded recreational access for individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments. The presentation was made by Councilmember Bill Kling (District 4) on behalf of the City Council and the Mayor.

Calvert was honored with a certificate signed by Mayor Tommy Battle and all council members. Kling praised her work for empowering Huntsville residents through outdoor recreation and inclusive adventure sports.

Calvert shared, “We do a monthly clinic for people with physical disabilities and visual impairments to try rock climbing. We believe adventure sports can be accessible.”

Council President Robinson thanked her, adding, “We have a lot of people doing good work in this community.”

Team Redstone Recognized for Army 10-Miler Championships

Next, Councilmember Michelle Watkins (District 1) led a spirited recognition of Team Redstone for their outstanding performance at the 41st Annual Army 10-Miler in Washington, D.C. Team Redstone once again brought home the Eagle Trophy, winning the Government Division with a combined time of 4:11:04, while also placing second in the All Commerce Division.

Watkins celebrated the runners’ resilience through travel delays and weather challenges, honoring athletes including Hunter Nails, Josh Whitehead, Sean Allen, Matt Casiano, and Gabriel Henniger.

Longtime head coach Harry Hobbs was also recognized for his leadership since 2004. Hobbs emphasized the team’s camaraderie and community pride, saying, “It’s not just about winning — it’s the journey.”

In a special moment, Hobbs honored Watkins for her support of the team, presenting her with the finishing Arlington Mallard Medal as a token of appreciation. Watkins accepted the medal to applause from the council and audience.

Council and Community Announcements

Council President Robinson announced two key updates:

  • joint meeting of the City Council and Huntsville Board of Education will take place on January 29 at 4 p.m., featuring a presentation of the Huntsville City Schools Capital Plan.
  • The return of the Deck the Districts holiday decorating contest, with entries due December 12 and winners recognized at the December 18 meeting.

The council then moved forward with public hearings and regular business.
