More Highway Digital Message Boards Coming to Huntsville

Mayor Tommy Battle said Huntsville’s new digital message boards, approved in a $3.1 million plan with ALDOT, will give drivers real-time updates and improve roadway safety.

HUNTSVILLE — Drivers in Huntsville will soon see more digital highway message boards thanks to a $3.1 million funding agreement between the City and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). The project, approved by City Council, will be covered primarily by the Federal Carbon Reduction Program (80%), with the City contributing $640,000.

The new boards will be placed along U.S. 72 East, U.S. 431, U.S. 231, Memorial Parkway, and Governors Drive, though exact locations have not been finalized. They will operate much like the existing boards on Interstate 565, which are part of ALDOT’s $5.2 million advanced corridor management project. That effort also includes 10 traffic cameras and two weather stations to monitor road conditions in real time.

Mayor Tommy Battle said the technology is already proving its value.

“We have experienced the benefits of this technology on Interstate 565 and we look forward to the construction of more message boards,” Battle said in a City of Huntsville statement. “These signs inform drivers about what’s ahead and will make our roadways even safer.”

A third digital sign on I-565 is currently being completed, with the new set of installations expected to provide broader coverage across Huntsville’s busiest corridors.
