Jefferson County investigators have charged a man in connection with a fatal Thanksgiving night shooting that authorities called “incredibly upsetting.”
Marvin Arnold has been charged with reckless manslaughter and certain persons forbidden to carry a firearm. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $75,000 bond.
The arrest Friday came in connection with the Nov. 24 killing of Theodore Alexander Hill, 23. Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded at 6:40 p.m. to the 2400 block of Fifth Street N.W. on a report of a person shot.
Deputies arrived and found Hill unresponsive on the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:59 p.m.
According to the sheriff’s office, shots were fired from a vehicle that was passing the Fifth Street N.W. home where Arnold and Hill were celebrating Thanksgiving.
The victim and Arnold had gone outside of the home to return fire at the passing vehicle. Hill was inadvertently killed by bullets Arnold fired.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office called the circumstances surrounding Hill’s death “incredibly upsetting.”
“There are now two lives and two families who will never be the same,” Lt. Joni Money stated.
“One life was lost, the other will be forever changed at the loss of a friend and possible incarceration. This is further evidence that only responsible, safety-conscious individuals should possess firearms. One must consider that once the bullet leaves a weapon, it cannot be recalled.
“There are no do-overs, no fresh set of lives. This is not a video game. It is real life and mishandling a firearm can take or change the lives of anyone in the path of that bullet,” Money said.
