If you didn’t attend the National Baptist Convention in Minneapolis, MN, this week (and don’t have friends who did), chances are you’ll have to wait until news trickles down the black church grapevine to find out what happened at the 138th annual session of the nation’s largest black Christian denomination.

Well, wait no more. Based on reports from social media and local news sources, we’ve put together a recap of some of the good news coming out of the Twin Cities where 15,000 members of the largest black Christian denomination in the world held their five-day meeting.

President Jerry Young addressed the convention.

NAACP President Derrick Jackson spoke on power and character.

Derrick Jackson, the president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, addressed President’s Educational Banquet during the meeting. “We need more people with character, not more characters,” he said, according to WCCO-TV reporter Angela Davis.

A report from a survey of young people conducted by the NBC was delivered at the convention. Its primary finding was that many young people want shorter church services.

NBC and Comcast promoted their partnership aimed at erasing the digital divide and providing “internet essentials” for many in the black community who may not have liberal access to the web.

‘Sound of Gospel’ event highlights rich history of church music.

According to The Star-Tribune, “The Sound of Gospel was a 90-minute narrative conceived by music director B. Charvez Russell as part of the 138th annual session of the National Baptist Convention USA Inc., unfolding this week in Minneapolis. A script written by playwright William Pierce and spoken by Twin Cities actor T. Mychael Rambo anchored a string of musical performances, tracing the history of gospel music from its origins to the present.”

The leaders of the NBC’s Home Mission Board division were honored at a luncheon. The HMB “has as its fundamental purpose the promotion of Christian missions in the United States and U.S. Virgin Islands.”

During the five-day event, the NBC’s Home Mission Board got out and about to meet some of the residents of the community hosting the annual meeting.

Dr. Nathan Johnson spoke on “Facing and Surviving the Struggles of Ministry.”

He addressed the National Baptist Convention Moderators Division (Dr. William Wyne, President).
