Women’s Equality Day Celebrates the anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution on August 26, 1920, 98 years ago! This event was first celebrated in 1971 when Representative Bella Abzug presented a proposal to Congress to mark this as an annual occasion to be celebrated. The purpose for the observance is to raise awareness about the importance of gender equality in society and to recognize and celebrate the hard work and sacrifices made by the pioneers in the women’s suffrage movement. The 19th amendment granted women the right time to vote for the first time and was a result of the women’s suffrage movement in the country.”
While various challenges still exist this amendment ensures that women can make their voices heard and affect policy change. Many women’s organizations and groups hold seminars and workshops on this day to address issues and problems currently facing women in their community. Oakwood University Church Women’s Ministries Department will join this celebration on August 26, 2018. Be sure to participate.
