Netflix Pulls Plug on Older Devices: Millions May Lose Streaming Access

By SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

Users of older gaming consoles and smart TVs — including Sony’s PlayStation 3 — are receiving warnings that Netflix support will soon expire.

Millions of viewers could soon find themselves unable to stream their favorite shows as Netflix begins ending support for older devices, including certain gaming consoles and aging smart TVs.

Industry reports indicate that some users — particularly those with Sony’s PlayStation 3 — have started receiving expiration notices warning that Netflix access will end after Monday, March 2. While neither Netflix nor Sony has issued a broad public announcement, tech publications report that the streaming giant is phasing out compatibility with devices more than a decade old.

The PlayStation 3, launched in 2006, received a Netflix app in 2010 and remained one of the last seventh-generation consoles to support the service. Sony sold approximately 87 million PS3 units worldwide, though analysts note that only a portion of those consoles remain active today. Newer consoles, including the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, will not be affected.

In addition to the PS3, some smart TVs manufactured more than 10 years ago and select older set-top boxes are reportedly losing Netflix functionality. Tech experts say the move is likely tied to evolving security standards and software requirements that outdated hardware can no longer support.

Netflix maintains an updated list of compatible devices on its website, and most televisions, streaming sticks, and gaming consoles produced within the last decade should continue to operate normally.

Consumers using older devices may need to upgrade their hardware or switch to newer streaming platforms to maintain uninterrupted access to Netflix’s content library.
