Supporters are calling for Mars Music Hall to be renamed the “Microwave Dave Music Hall” in honor of blues legend and educator Dave Gallaher.

Huntsville and the greater Tennessee Valley continue to mourn the loss of one of their most beloved cultural figures. Dave “Microwave Dave” Gallaher (April 25, 1946 – February 6, 2026) passed away at the age of 80, leaving behind a musical and educational legacy that shaped North Alabama for decades.

As tributes continue, a public petition is now calling on Huntsville city leaders to rename Mars Music Hall in Gallaher’s honor. The Avaaz petition, created by a local fan, proposes renaming the venue the “Microwave Dave Music Hall” as a lasting tribute to his influence as a performer, mentor, and advocate for music education. The petition has already gathered more than 100 signatures toward its goal of 200.

Before becoming synonymous with Huntsville’s blues scene, Gallaher lived a life shaped by music and service. Born in Chicago and raised in Texas, he spent his early years in Dallas, Amarillo, and Houston, learning guitar and performing rhythm and blues. His journey later took him to Atlanta, where he played with The Majestics. While performing there, Gallaher once shared a bill with a young Aretha Franklin, a moment he later recalled as formative in his understanding of soul, blues, and musical excellence.

Gallaher’s life changed profoundly during his service as an Air Force intelligence specialist in the Vietnam War. He later said his time in Vietnam changed everything, leading him to vow that if he made it home, he would dedicate his life to music and to helping people feel better through it. After his honorable discharge in 1971, he studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston before eventually settling in Huntsville in the 1980s.

As frontman of Microwave Dave & The Nukes, Gallaher became Huntsville’s signature blues musician, touring internationally and earning recognition as Southern Blues Guitarist of the Year/Modern in 2003. His fans included acclaimed novelist Stephen King, who wrote the introduction to his 2021 biography.

Beyond the stage, Gallaher’s greatest passion was music education. Through the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation and the annual Microwave Dave Day, he brought music into classrooms and inspired generations of young musicians across North Alabama.

Whether or not the venue renaming moves forward, supporters say the petition reflects the deep love Huntsville holds for Microwave Dave and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
