A Huntsville woman has been arrested and indicted of reckless murder after police say she was driving under the influence during an August crash that killed 13-year-old Kallel “Kal” Fox, a student at Mountain Gap Middle School.
According to the Huntsville Police Department, Sara Brianne Oleson, 33, was taken into custody Monday following a months-long investigation that included toxicology testing and a review by the Madison County District Attorney’s Office. A grand jury returned the indictment earlier this week.
The deadly crash happened on August 5, around 3:30 p.m., in the Bailey Cove area. Fox was riding his bike and attempting to legally cross the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle. Police say Oleson was identified as the driver and remained at the scene, where investigators reportedly found “substances known to cause impairment” inside her vehicle.
Fox’s death sent shockwaves through the community and Mountain Gap Middle School. His obituary described him as a bright and unforgettable young person: “In his short thirteen years, Kal made his presence undeniable… This world is far less beautiful without Kal around.”
Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles called the case “especially heartbreaking,” noting the exhaustive work by HPD investigators. “Our Traffic Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit worked tirelessly to examine every detail,” he said. “We hope this step brings some measure of progress for the family as the justice process continues.”
Oleson’s bond has been set at $45,000 as the criminal case moves forward.
