Family and friends are mourning 20-year-old Kaliyah Houston and 16-year-old Christasia Prewitt, both killed in a late-night shooting.

Suspect Keshawn Jermichael Woods, 19, was arrested hours after the deadly attack and is charged with capital murder.

The family of two young sisters killed in a tragic Tuscaloosa shooting is asking the community for help as they prepare to lay the girls to rest. Kaliyah Houston, 20, and Christasia Prewitt, 16, were fatally shot late Monday night at their apartment in Woodlawn Manor. A 17-year-old boy was also wounded but managed to escape and seek help.

“These beautiful young girls tragically lost their lives,” a family friend wrote on Facebook on behalf of the sisters’ grandmother. Loved ones are urging anyone able to assist with burial costs to send donations directly to Wills Funeral Home, 701 Martin Luther King Blvd., Northport, 35476.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said the shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday. Investigators learned that the suspect, 19-year-old Keshawn Jermichael Woods, had been staying in Houston’s apartment for several months.

According to Kennedy, the violence began when an argument erupted inside the home. Woods reportedly pulled a gun and opened fire, striking all three teens. Several very young children, including an infant, were also inside the apartment but were not harmed.

Woods fled on foot after the shooting, but authorities quickly pieced together witness accounts and processed the scene. A capital murder warrant was issued within hours. The U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Woods shortly afterward.

He is charged with capital murder and attempted murder and is currently being held without bond.

As the investigation continues, the community is rallying around the grieving family, offering prayers, donations, and support during an unimaginable loss.
