The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is one of five service academies available to students through congressional nomination.

U.S. Representative Terri Sewell (D-AL) has announced that her office is now accepting applications from high school seniors in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District seeking a congressional nomination to a U.S. military service academy.

“Nominating students in our district to attend our United States military service academies is one of my most satisfying duties as a Member of Congress,” Sewell said. “There is no greater act of patriotism than choosing to serve as a part of our nation’s armed forces. An education from a military service academy is a great way to jumpstart your career and develop exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills that will serve you well for years to come. I encourage all graduating seniors to consider this exciting opportunity.”

Five Prestigious Academies

The nation’s service academies include:

  • U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point
  • U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) at Annapolis
  • U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs
  • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, New York
  • U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, Connecticut

Nominations are required for all except the Coast Guard Academy, which selects students through its own process.

Eligibility & Application Process

Applicants must be legally domiciled in Alabama’s 7th District and meet eligibility requirements established by law. To be considered, students must complete a nomination application, which is available on Rep. Sewell’s official website.

Successful nominees may earn appointments to one of the academies, beginning a career path marked by rigorous academics, military training, and public service.
