The Alabama House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow public schools to hire volunteer chaplains.

Campus chaplains would be made available to provide support, services, and programs at the request of any teacher in the local school district, the bill says.

The legislation is sponsored by Rep. Mark Gidley, R-Gadsden, who is a pastor.

The bill had strong support from Republicans as well as the Democratic minority.
