A video posted to social media Monday shows the occupants of a truck shouting “white power!” outside the home of a Black Homewood resident.
Felita Wilson, who posted the video, said the incident happened outside her home in a neighborhood off Valley Avenue at about 9:40 p.m. Monday.
“It makes me a little nervous because of the climate of things,” Wilson said of the incident. “That was pretty bold. This is a quiet neighborhood. It just makes you wonder about safety.”
According to Wilson’s daughter Jordan, the truck slowed down while passing the house as she and her boyfriend were getting out of their car. Two white men, perhaps in their teens or twenties, were driving up to the corner of Beckham and Barry to turn left towards Valley, she said.
“Once they saw us, they started screaming,” Jordan said.
According to Felita Wilson, the occupants of the truck yelled “White power! White power!” as they passed. On the video, the shouts can be heard and the truck spotted in the background.
“They were old enough to know better,” she said.
Wilson posted the video from her doorbell camera to Facebook. She said this morning that she’s never encountered an act like this while living in the neighborhood, though a Doug Jones re-election sign, and a sign reading, “We don’t tolerate racism,” were stolen from her yard in 2020.
“If you don’t live in this area, you’re not taking these streets as backroads,” she said. “We haven’t had any issues, but things change.” She plans on adding more cameras and lighting to her home.
A Homewood police spokesman said, as of this morning, the department has not received a report of the incident, but Wilson said she intended to file a report later today.
“We have lived in Homewood for years…. Raised our children here and don’t intend to be harassed and most definitely not intimidated,” Wilson wrote when posting the video. “So if anyone happens to know who this may be please advise them that this will NOT be tolerated at all. It’s disgusting.”
