Scriptural text: Revelation 22:1-9
Lesson in Context: The tree of life was an important feature in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:9). It is also an important feature in the New Jerusalem. The tree of life is a primary feature of “the paradise of God” (Revelation 2:7). Some have referred to this paradise as Eden restored, as people eat the fruit of the tree with God’s blessings.
What John Saw (Revelation 22:1-5):
Water of Life (v. 1).
1a. “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal.” The heavenly state which was before described as a city, and called the New Jerusalem, is here described as a paradise; alluding the earthly paradise which was lost by sin of the first Adam here is another paradise restored by the second Adam. A paradise in a city, or a whole city in a paradise! The earthly paradise was well watered: no place can be pleasant or fruitful that is not so. The river is described: 1. By its-fountain-head-the throne of God and the Lamb. All are springs of grace, comfort, and glory, are in God; and all our streams from him are through the meditation of the Lamb. 2. By its quality- pure and clear as crystal. All the streams of earthly comfort are muddy; but these are clear; salutary; and refreshing; giving life; and preserving life; to those who drink of them.
Tree of Life (v. 2).
In this paradise. Such a tree was in an earthly paradise (Gen. 2:9). This far excels it. And now, as to this tree, observe, 1. The situation of it– in the midst of the street, and on either side of the river. This tree of life is fed by the pure waters of the river that comes from the throne of God. 2. The fruitfulness of this tree, 1. It brings forth many sorts of fruit-twelve sorts, suited to the refined taste of all of the saints. 2. It brings forth its fruit at all times-yields its fruit every month. This tree is never empty, never barren, there is always fruit upon it.
Leaves of Healing (v. 2c).
“And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” This healing is not stated to be for the curing of individual wounds, viruses, etc. Rather, it is for the healing of the nations. A key idea is that of spiritual healing for all the peoples from many nations depicts that kings of the earth streaming into the new city. This indicates, among other things, a final and lasting peace among all nations.
What John Heard (Revelation 22:6-7).
A. Angel Speaks (v. 6). “And he said unto me, These things are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.”
The Lord Jesus spake by the angel, solemnly confirming the content of this book, particularly of this last vision. He is the Lord God faithful and true. Also by his messengers; the holy angels showed them to the holy men of God. They are things that must shortly be done; Christ will come quickly, and put all things out of doubt.
