The disturbing picture of Mr. George Floyd, with the knee of a white police officer on his neck pinning him to the concrete pavement until his life was snuffed out, is a horrible scene of how racism is alive and well in America. Mr. Floyd’s death is a demonstration of the lack of appreciation for Black life and for the sanctity of human life in general.
George Floyd’s unnecessary death has rightly triggered the outpouring of protest from people of all races, creeds, and gender from all parts of the United States and the World. In the wake of his brutal death, voices are heard in the global community – England, France, Germany, the Vatican, and other nations – decrying the racist murder and demanding justice for George.
Therefore, The Greater Huntsville Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship joins with the citizens of Huntsville, Alabama and millions across the globe as we denounce this cruel act of violence causing the death of our brother, and at the same time call for swift justice to be executed on his behalf.
We grieve with the family of Mr. Floyd and stand hand in hand with them as they call for justice for their loved one. The lead police officer, Mr. Chauvin, and the remaining three must be held accountable for their ignoble actions or the lack thereof. They must be brought to justice.
It is our hope that this dark moment in our history can become a pivotal turning point wherein All of us will make America a more perfect union – a place where everyone is treated with dignity and honor and all lives will be understood to be sacred because all of us are created in the image and likeness of God, our Creator. May this be the moment when all of us will fully embrace the lofty words of Thomas Jefferson: “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men (persons) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
